The Story Book

A fine collection of moments in time from hello FRAGRANCE

Chapter One — Where It All Began

Where It All Began

The story of hello FRAGRANCE didn’t begin with perfume.

It began with home fragrance.

Long before the hello FRAGRANCE name appeared on a bottle, we were learning about fragrance through wax, fragrance oils and the products people used to make their homes smell beautiful.

Like many small businesses, the journey wasn’t mapped out from the beginning. There was no grand plan showing exactly where we would eventually end up.

Instead, the business developed through ideas, experiments and experience.

Our earliest ventures gave us the opportunity to learn something that would later become incredibly important: fragrance is personal.

Two people can smell exactly the same fragrance and have completely different reactions to it.

One scent can remind someone of a person. Another can bring back a place, a holiday or a particular moment in their life.

We began to understand that we weren’t simply working with wax and fragrance oils.

We were working with something capable of creating memories.

Learning Through Fragrance

As the business developed, so did our understanding of fragrance.

We learned that creating a product people enjoy is not simply about choosing a nice smell.

Fragrance has to work in the real world.

It has to perform well, suit the product it is being used in and, most importantly, appeal to the person using it.

Through making and selling home fragrance products, we began to understand fragrance families, strength, balance and how different scents behave.

We also learned by listening to customers.

Some preferred sweet fragrances. Others wanted something fresh, floral, woody or warm.

Those conversations slowly helped shape the way we thought about fragrance.

Instead of seeing fragrance as just one ingredient in a product, it started becoming the most important part of the experience.

That change in thinking would eventually lead us much further than we expected.
